Jo's Kantelier

Overlapped sewing of Flanders Lace

Disadvantages when compared to knotting.

  • Twice the number of ends.

Advantages

  • No backside or frontside.
  • Starting mistakes are no problem. Double a little more and cut away the start.
  • You don't need to wind your bobbins in pairs. So you can continue many projects with once fully wound bobbins.

Explanation of the overlapped sewing method in some books

  • Flanders Lace, a step-by-step guide, by Mary Niven (only Flanders)
  • Het lassen en aannaaien van kant, by Louise Allis-Viddeleer (any type of lace)
  • The Beginning of the End, by Ulrike Löhr (general, no specific attention for Flanders)

It took almost a year between lacing and sewing. The lace could easily distort in such a period. So I did pull the pins from the pillow, but not from the pricking.

For cutting I only left pins along the sides of the lower layer. Soft pulling then easy shows what to cut.

The result of my very first attempt. I just didn't have a thinner thread of the same colour.
